When you look at it in the front, it looks almost like a bird.

That was the purpose of its design. To be a bird of prey

The ultimate bunker buster from the mighty Star Empire. Massive forwards facing weapons arrays, shielding and top of the line cloaks not something you want to see decloaking on your tail.

The only issue I have with this ship is the lack of rear mounted weapons, it turns to slow to be so forward heavy in weapons, but I think this flaw came form the fact the Romulans like the klingons always preferred to put their guns on the front and could get away with it as their ships where agile, this however was not.

Its funny but if you think about it, the weaponry is very two dimensional, i.e. grouped to the fore etc, what about above and below?
To paraphrase what Spock said in The Wrath of Khan "(their) thinking is two dimensional"!

Aye it is the major flaw of this ship, still the great strength of these vessels shows in a fleet engagement, all that firepower cuts through whatever is in front it like butter.

Cover it than with 2 more agile ships and you got yourself a good old bomber which needs some fighter escort :)

I do however doubt they be making anything like this again, to many downsides, more likely to see them going with smaller more agile vessels or better all around armament.

Agreed a single D'Deridex with two Valdores as escort, would be the most logical.

If you think back to DS9 during the Dominion War, the D'Deridex suffered through a lack of maneuverability, the attack on the Founder's supposed home planet is a prime example. Going back to The Next Generation episode "The Neutral Zone" the D'Deridex was used as a "Show of Strength" basically a bluff which on first impression works quite well, however once its weaknesses were known, it proved to be beatable.

Large starships are useful if not downright essential, especially in terms of deep-space exploration, remember a mission lasting 5 years NEEDS a large vessel (a prime example being the 26th century Universe Class (from ST Enterprise)). This vessel would be your home for that time, if you are 100,000 light years away on the other side of the Galaxy its not a case of getting home in a day!

True, but the Romulans are not explorers they are conquerors, so much of their exploration takes place close to the boarders and under cloak :)

But yes it is a major bluff card, but to weak on it's own.

The front of this thing always reminds me of a massive, green nose. Ironic, considering some details on the Romulans were taken from Rome's history and myths.

I also find this ship quite impressive - considering the whole Enterprise-D could park inside the space between the Warbird's wings. Rather frightening notion, really.

I forget the reasoning behind the design, but it was supposed to show the Romulan's had become powerful, and had learned from their past mistakes.

interesting how much the size figurea differ. the DS9TM, largely seen as inreliable, tells 1041 meters length although Andy Probert designed this ship at 1353 meters, other sources tell 1200 meters while another one tells 1280 meters...

Oh god yes, I just wish once and for all, CBS/Paramount/whoever would once and for all do a definitive guide/encyclopedia/whatever to the canon types, which everyone who are interested in ST vessels could use! :p

Agreed, I think this is why I started doing this project of canon types, perhaps someone in Paramount/CBS/whoever would see this and think "OK its time WE set the records straight" - saying that similar things HAVE been done before - with NO official movement, so I can keep hoping!
